Professional sports are synonymous with effort, discipline, passion, and often, success. But they also involve well-defined stages, moments of change, and transitions that can be complex if not approached with preparation. Retirement from active competition—though inevitable—remains a scarcely addressed topic, despite its significant personal, professional, and financial impact on athletes’ lives.
With the goal of shedding light on this reality, on May 22 the Caixabank All In One facilities in Madrid hosted a roundtable discussion organized by CaixaBank Private Banking, in collaboration with the University of Navarra’s Sport Management graduate program and Senn Ferrero Asociados. The event brought together leading figures from Spanish sports, such as Amaya Valdemoro, Aitor Karanka, Igor González de Galdeano, and Víctor Claver, alongside financial and legal experts including our Partner Julio Senn and Antonio Matilla, Head of Private Banking for CaixaBank’s Sports Division. The conversation was moderated by Rafa Sahuquillo, editor-in-chief at RADIO MARCA.
During the discussion, the athletes shared their experiences of retiring from professional sports. Drawing from their careers in basketball, cycling, and football, they spoke about the emotional and practical challenges of closing a chapter that had defined them for years, highlighting the importance of preparing personally, gaining new skills, and planning ahead for their financial future.
